Moisture In Your Taillights - No Big Deal.

You are probably reading this because:

A) You have moisture in your tail lights
B) You know someone with moisture in their tail lenses
C) You're bored

Either way, I’m bringin’ the goods for you today. I’m going to tell you how to fix one of the biggest problems that plague the custom truck industry – moisture in your tail lights.

You know the drill: You get home from the grind to find a nice brown box on your doorstep. You open the box and your heart lifts with joy at the sight of your new tail lights. You rush outside to put them on your rig. Then you wash your truck. Later that night or the next morning you notice that one tail light is all fogged up and the other has an inch of water resting in the bottom. “Oh no,” you say. “I’ve got water in my tail lights!”

Before you get unhappy about buying some “leaky” taillights, let me break down what actually happened: CSI style:

When you took off your old tail lenses you didn’t replace the little rubber/foam gasket that seals the hole that the bulb twists into. Through years of abuse, your old gasket just wasn’t up to the task of sealing against a new surface. You sealed (ha-ha) its fate when you washed your truck and poured water all over your new tail lights. That water found its way past that opening and into your tail lenses. This phenomenon actually happens all the time with your stock tail lights and it has a name: Fishbowl Syndrome.

There is a small rubber or foam gasket on your bulb socket. When you push your bulbs into the housing and twist them down, that gasket is compressed and seals the opening. This eliminates any water from entering your tail lights. This little gasket is often overlooked when installing new tail lenses. Once your stock gasket has been compressed for a while, it doesn’t spring back as much and won’t seal against a new surface.

There are two things that you can do to solve your problem:

1. Buy a new gasket. Any auto parts store worth their paychecks should carry this product for you.

2. Use petrolium jelly to seal the gasket. Spreading a small layer of petrolium jelly on the gasket will help it seal to the new surface temporarily.

Motor Trade Insurance – Is The Price Right?

If you’re a Motor Trader you’ll know more than anyone just how price sensitive the automotive industry can be. And as Motor Trade Insurance is likely to be one of your companies biggest outgoings paying the right price for your Motor Trader Insurance is going to be vital.

Whilst the UK has benefited from a pretty stable financial environment in recent years with rising house prices, low interest rates and many companies making money there now maybe signs of a change. During 2006 interest rates rose steadily and with 1 rate rise in 2007 already (and with more forecast as the year progresses) there is every chance that there will be less disposable income in the UK economy.

So what will this mean for consumers and Motor Traders?

Well for consumers it could mean they have less money to spend on new cars, second cars or indeed on the servicing and repair of existing vehicles. There is also every chance that as value for money becomes more of an issue they will shop around to secure the best price and service.

And when Motor Traders Insurance policies come due for renewal there is every chance they too will start looking around to secure the best deal on their Motor Trade Insurance. And if indeed money is an issue it is very easy for companies in the motor industry to opt for the cheapest is best option. After all, isn’t one type of Business Insurance pretty much the same as all the others?

Well for Motor Traders in the UK I would urge you to proceed with caution as whilst low cost motor trade insurance is available from many different insurance providers you don’t want to leave yourself in a position without the right level of cover or the right insurance excess (or deductable).

For many motor traders the best option to take when buying motor trade insurance for the first time or when their current motor trader insurance comes due for renewal would be to consult the services of an insurance broker. An insurance broker who specializes in motor trade insurance can search the market to find you the right cover at the right price so you not only save time – but you also save money.

In the event of you needing to make a claim they can also help you get the claim settled quicker and more favourably. A good insurance broker should give you advice and make sure you only pay for the insurance cover you need and want.

Motor Trade Insurance: An Absolute Essential, Part 1

If you are in the motor trading business, then the most important aspect of your business is getting the best price possible. The only way that you can make money on your deals is if you get the lowest purchase price, the lowest repair prices (if needed), and the highest sales price possible. All of these things are very important for motor traders to be able to turn a profit. However there is one very important thing missing from this puzzle and that is motor trade insurance.

Motor trade insurance is very important in the motor trading business because it can protect the assets that you acquire, while you are driving them or not. If you do not have motor trade insurance then all of your profits can be lost very easily with one wreck, one stolen vehicle, or one bad storm. If you do have motor trade insurance, then you will be able to get sleep at night and not worry about your cars all of the time.

The hardest part of being a part of the motor trade industry is trying to keep your vehicles in good shape and in your possession. While you are driving the vehicle you can get into a wreck, while your car is at the shop it can be wrecked, and even just sitting on the street your vehicle can be wrecked, so you need to have some protection against damage to your car.

Also, a bad hail storm or tornado can occur and wreck your whole fleet of cars at once. If you have motor trade insurance, then you can protect your vehicles and make the repairs necessary to get the money back on the vehicles that were damaged during the storm. If you can keep your vehicles in good shape then you still might not be in the clear, because someone might steal your vehicle and then sell it. However certain types of motor trade insurance can protect you against this as well. All of these are good reasons to have motor trade insurance, but you have to find a plan that fits your specific business needs.

Motor Trade Insurance: An Absolute Essential, Part 2

Motor trade insurance is a necessity for anyone that makes a living in the motor trade industry. The hardest thing about motor trade insurance is picking a plan that fits your needs and also fits your budget. If the motor trade insurance is not a good fit for your business and you do not find the best price possible, this insurance could actually be a cancer on your business instead of a cure. Many different companies offer many different plans with a wide range of monthly premiums. I think that the best way to find the perfect insurance for your business is to use an insurance brokerage company. An insurance brokerage company can help you tailor a motor trade insurance plan to your needs, get you the best price, and also help you get money when you have to make a claim.

An insurance brokerage company can help to find a plan that fits your business, because they have a bunch of different insurance company contacts that they can tap into to get you what you need. It would take you about two to three times as long to get in contact with the insurance companies that the brokerage company can contact, and sometimes you might not even be able to contact the same companies. Also a brokerage company understands all of the insurance jargon that insurance companies use, so they can move quickly to match your needs to a motor trade insurance plan. Also since the insurance brokerage company has access to so many insurance companies they can put pressure on them to get you the best price possible.

An insurance brokerage company can help you get paid the money you deserve on the claims you file. Many of these companies have their own claims person that works for you to try to get the money you deserve from the insurance company. This is not so easy to do on your own, because once again it is hard to understand all of the terminology used in the insurance business. If you are in the motor trade industry then you need to have motor trade insurance, and your best bet is to use an insurance brokerage company to get exactly what you need.

Motor Trader Insurance – 4 Reasons How Insurance Brokers Can Help Your Business

Before we start to look at why using an insurance broker could be the perfect way to buy your Motor Trader Insurance let’s start off with a few supposed truths about the insurance industry.

Number 1 – Let’s be honest from the beginning and just say it – most people don’t like insurance. For most people losses rarely occur and therefore they are paying out insurance premiums year on year and yet they don’t actually see any real benefit of it.

Number 2 – Most people (even those who have suffered a loss and have made a claim) see insurance as too expensive with actual insurance companies seen as money grabbing and having no purpose other than to make money.

Number 3 – People see insurance as either boring and sold by men in suits or sold using annoying advertising on the television promising cheap or the cheapest insurance and delivering call centres who seemingly have replaced customer service with queues and staff who don’t really know what they are talking about.

If you’re a Motor Trader who needs to purchase Motor Trade Insurance and any of the 3 points above ring a bell with you then you really need to read on and discover just 4 reasons why using an insurance broker could be just what you need when you next buy your business insurance.

The first reason for using an insurance broker is that they can save you time. Yes you could spend time trawling the internet, thumbing through the yellow pages or ringing around a selection of insurance companies but you could also contact just 1 insurance broker and let them do the work for you. As a motor trader I’m sure you’re time could be put to better use elsewhere anyway.

The second reason why you might want to use an insurance broker when purchasing motor trader insurance is that providing they are independent (that is they have access to more than one policy) they can search to find you the very best cover. Cover that in some cases isn’t available anywhere else.

Another reason for choosing an insurance broker is that they can very often provide you with a level of service that you won’t find elsewhere. Go direct with an insurance company and there’s every chance you’ll be faced with queues, call centres and people without a real understanding of your needs. However choose the right insurance broker who understands the motor trade and you can benefit from advice and guidance aimed at reducing your exposure to risk. And in the event of a loss occurring they will even act on your behalf to make sure your claim is settled quickly and favourably.

The fourth and final reason why using an insurance broker could be just what you need when buying motor trade insurance is that they could save you money and we’d all no doubt like to be paying less for our insurance. A good broker will therefore be able to take advantage of the facilities they have with the leading insurance companies so you benefit from the cover, the service, the time savings and the premium savings all from the same source.

Motor Trade Insurance doesn’t have to complicated or expensive so find the right broker and make sure the price is right for your Business Insurance.

Motorcycle Accessories For The Smart Rider

A motorcycle is incomplete without accessories. You need to pep up your motorbike with smart exhausts, chrome rims, air cleaners, sleek saddlebags, transparent windshields and shiny fenders if you want your bike to be noticed. These motorcycle accessories go on the bike. But what about you?

You too need to buy a full set of motorcycle gear for yourself. These accessories should include DOT certified helmets, protective leather jackets, motorcycle boots, motorcycle gloves and UV protected sunglasses.

You have the option to buy the accessories prescribed by the manufacturer. Or you can have them custom-designed. The latter will cost more, but will give your bike a completely personalized look.

Most riders love to change the exhausts first. It is not because the exhausts are sub-standard. On the contrary, the exhausts give bikes a style of their own. That’s why most riders prefer to install exhausts like M4, DD, and Cobra. These exhausts come in a variety of styles and finishes, and can be bought both offline and online.

It is important that when selecting an exhaust you should look at both performance and style. A good idea is to take the advice of experienced riders or bike mechanics. There’s no point in installing an exhaust that may look good but may not last long.

Chrome-plating, of course, is another ball game. You can select the parts that need to be chromed, and get the work done at standard chrome plating shops. Make sure that the plating is smooth, and there are no bubbles on the surface.

You can also consider installing windshields. These are especially useful in windy conditions. The only thing that you must make sure is that they should be made of clear plastic and should not obstruct vision.

You also need to spend some time on helmets. More than looks, you should see that the helmets fit your head closely. They should also stay on the head, and not roll off on impact. Also, if you want to go for a full face helmet you must ensure that you have a clear view. It should not be blocked by the helmet’s shield. A good way is to keep the helmet on for about 20 minutes or so. This will give you an idea of comfort levels.

Sunglasses are equally important accessories. They not only keep out glare but also protect your eyes from dust and flying insects, not to mention harmful UV rays. Also, you should not forget gloves and boots. Both are critical. Without good quality leather gloves, your fingers will go numb in the winters. Similarly, the boots not only protect you from serious injuries but also keep your ankle and feet protected from rain. Finally, you should go for leather jackets that have some armor protection on elbows and shoulders.

You are ready to ride out – in style and safely -- once you have all this.

Motorcycle Helmets: The Statistics

When you go for a ride on your motorcycle, you’re out to have fun. And hey, you’ve never had a crash before, so why would it happen now? Here are the government statistics about motorcycle helmets.

A brief history of the Law

In 1967, the US federal government said that it would take away funding from any state that didn’t have a helmet law. By 1975, 47 states had complied with the federal government. However, in 1976, they repealed the law, ruling it unconstitutional. Most states softened their helmet laws.

Kentucky and Louisiana

In the late 1990s, Kentucky and Louisiana repealed their helmet laws. While the helmet laws were in effect, nearly 100% of the people wore their helmets. When the laws came off the books, it fell to only half of people wearing helmets. The rate of fatalities per number of registered motorcycles rose 37% in Kentucky, and it rose a staggering 74% in Louisiana.

Don’t mess with Texas

Similarly to Kentucky and Louisiana, Texas took its helmet law off the books in 1997 for riders 21 or older who have insurance or training. Helmet use dropped from 96% to 66%, and motorcycle related deaths went up 1/3rd. This means that the death rates corresponds almost directly to the proportion of people who do not wear helmets.

Florida’s Example

Florida repealed its helmet law in 2000. From 1997-1999 (three years while the law was in place) 515 motorcycle riders were killed in crashes; 48 of those deaths were people not wearing helmets. From 2001-2003 (three years after the law was created) there were 933 motorcycle riders killed in crashes; 566 of these were not wearing their helmet.

What we can learn from this is that more people die when helmet use becomes optional. There were roughly 400 deaths in each three year period of people who wear helmets. However, the rate of people who died not wearing helmets went up more than 10 times. This is not coincidental.

Helmet Law Defense League

The Helmet Law Defense League is a group of people who lobby against laws requiring the use of helmets. They claim that it anti-constitutional to force people to wear helmets. They also argue that the word “helmet” is too vague.

Bells and Whistles

Even if you don’t choose to wear a motorcycle helmet for safety reasons, there are other reasons. The face guard allows you to see more clearly and prevents damage to your eyes when you go at high speeds. It also offers ear protection. Some helmets can be equipped with intercoms so you can communicate with your friends while you’re on your bike.

The Source

The mortality rate statistics are taken directly from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The figures can be accessed through their annual reports, and some are available on their websites.

Motorcycle Helmets For The Youth

It is particularly important to be aware of motorcycle safety when it comes to the youth. You might have a child who likes to ride motorcycles. To ensure his safety, try to invest in a youth motorcycle helmet that provides good protective coverage and excellent retention to help lessen your worries.

Youth motorcycle helmet safety also involves proper fit and sizing. Every motorcycle helmet dealer should have an expert available to help you find a youth motorcycle helmet that perfectly shaped to your child's head.

In looking for the perfect fitting motorcycle helmet for your child, it is better that you should bring him with you when you do your helmet shopping. This way, you can have him determine for himself if such a helmet would be perfect for his own use. Here are some tips that would be able to help you find that motorcycle helmet with the perfect fit.

Let your kid try on several motorcycle helmets for at least five minutes to check for any bothersome areas. Have him look in the mirror to check for symmetry and ensure that the motorcycle helmet rests just above the eyebrows and to check for red marks after taking off the helmet.

The comfort liner of a motorcycle helmet can form to the shape of your head so the helmet typically becomes more comfortable over time and use. Be sure that you start with a good fitting helmet. You should also make sure that the helmet you choose has undergone anti-scratch and anti-fog treatments. In addition, make sure that the visor doesn't touch the helmet’s outer shell that can result in scratches or fuzzy vision areas on your visor.

When choosing a youth motorcycle helmet, remember that a lighter model may be more comfortable than its heavier counterpart, but is perhaps less equipped to ensure motorcycle safety. You must be able to strike up the perfect balance over both features to ensure that your child enjoys comfort while wearing the helmet along with the features to provide the protection that you look for.

After you have purchased a helmet for your child, try to be cautious and careful in storing them. Avoid placing them in a high or unsteady location where the helmet could come crashing to the ground. Avoid the risk of scratching or busting an expensive motorcycle helmet by taking very good care of it. Avoid placing the helmet on the motorcycle saddle or the side mirrors. Doing so can damage the interior padding which can make the helmet unusable over time.

Motorcycle Laws In Different States

Different states in the US follow different motorcycle helmet laws that cater to their own residents and constituents. Motorcycle helmet law has been instituted to provide safety and protection to motorcycle riders from different states.

But the helmet law being followed in one state may not be the same as those followed in another. There are even other states that do not have their own laws governing the proper use of motorcycle helmets. There are currently 4 states that do not have their own motorcycle helmet law.

These are Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, and New Hampshire. Of the other 46 states, 20 of them follow full helmet law for all riders in their territory to follow. They are Alabama, California, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia. But each of these states’ motorcycle helmet laws may have differing definitions on what constitutes a safety helmet.

In the other remaining states, 19 have helmet laws that exempt adult riders. These are usually those riders who are 18 years old and over. These are the states of Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

There are seven states that require adult bikers at the ages of 18 and 20 to still wear helmets while riding their motorcycles. These states are Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Texas.

It is on these states that some bikers think that they are being discriminated upon because of the requirement for riders between 18 and 20 years old. But some motorcycle riders just would want to rid themselves of having to don their helmets while riding their motorcycles. But these riders should realize that helmets are there for their safety and protection.

Many motorcycle accidents have lessened rider mortalities, thanks to the protection offered by motorcycle helmets. DOT approved motorcycle helmets can help protect your head, most especially your brain from life threatening injuries in case of accidents. Your head is one of the most important parts of your body to protect while on a motorcycle because it houses the fragile brain.

Although your skull protects it, sudden jolts and stops can easily injure it. Such injuries can make your brain to swell due to internal bleeding and inflammation. And when it swells, it would not have enough space inside the skull for the extra volume and will bring more damage to some other very vital regions like the eyes.

Motorcycle Maintenance – A Basic Guide

Here we have a few things you should check on your motorcycle on a regular basis. I assume you have a handbook with the specs for your bike, if not, go get one. You may be able to find some data for your particular motorcycle on the net. You can also pick up workshop manuals for various models on eBay in PDF or CD form for little money.

Whereas with a four wheeled vehicle you may get away with being lax with things like tire pressures etc, this is not the case with a motorcycle. You should not risk compromising the safety and stability of your motorcycle, for the sake of a bit of routine maintenance.

Pre-ride check

•Tires – check condition and for foreign objects in the tread.

•Tire pressures – it is vitally important to keep your motorcycles tire pressures either on spec or very close to it.

•Oil level – always check with the bike on level ground.

•Coolant level – only if your bike’s liquid cooled, obviously.

•Chain – check the tension and make sure it’s well lubed.

•Brakes – check they work and that they feel good.

•Lights – check all your lights, especially the brake light, you don’t want to get rear ended, do you?

•Visual inspection – self explanatory.

•All ok – hit the road.

Periodical checks

•Check battery – see that the connections are tight; I dropped a bike once because of a loose battery connection, strange but true. Also check the electrolyte level on some batteries, a lot of newer batteries are gel filled, sealed for life types, so no need with these.

•Carb balance – if your bike is multi carbed get yourself a Morgan carbtune or similar. It can be a little tricky the first time you balance them, but when you’ve done it once, the second time will be easy.

•Ignition timing – only necessary on some bikes, most newer models have electronic ignition which does not need touching, normally.

•Valve clearances – unless you’re a good home mechanic, take it to a dealer.

•Wheel bearings – grab each wheel with it off the ground and see if there is any sideways play. There should be none or maybe a trace at most.

•Steering head bearings – with the front end off the ground, grab the forks and push and pull. There should be no play.

•Swinging arm bearings – with the back wheel off the ground, check for any sideways movement in the swingarm, there should be none.

•Brakes – check fluid levels, brake hoses for deterioration, and pads/shoes for thickness.

•Cables and levers – should operate smoothly. Get some grease on lever/pedal pivot points, and get some lube down the cables, if you can. A cable oiler is a handy tool.

•Nut and bolts – go all round the motorcycle with your spanners and check that all nuts/ bolts/screws are nice and tight.

Well, that’s about it for some basic maintenance, obviously, unless you’re a good home mechanic, any bigger jobs will have to go to a dealer. The problem can be finding a good one with skilled mechanics you can trust. I manage to keep my Yamaha Fazer 1000 running sweet just using the steps listed above. It does help that this model only needs the valve clearances checking every 26,000 miles.

Motorcycle Parts, Gear And Accessories

When it comes to riding down the road with freedom ahead of you and leaving the wind at your back, there are many different motorcycle apparel and motorcycle accessories to make your presence complete.

Motorcycle Helmets

Since you’re required by law to wear safety gear upon your head, you might as well express yourself through the creativity of your motorcycle helmet. Solid colors are available in every shade for both men and women. This also makes it easy to match the color of your ride. Flames, dragons, candy paints, spray designs… when it comes to motorcycle helmets, the possibilities are endless.

Motorcycle Jackets

Motorcycle jackets play an important role in the arrangement of motorcycle apparel. It doesn’t matter how hot the sun beams upon your skin during the summertime, there is always someone squeezing into his or her leather vest or motorcycle jacket. The materials used to create these motorcycle jackets go beyond the customary leather selections. Today, mesh, polyester mesh, waterproof Temperfoam and nylon are just some of the details that make up the construction of motorcycle jackets on the market. Some aspects of the jackets to be on the look out for include the color, fit and insulation.

Motorcycle Apparel

There are more than just motorcycle jackets to put on your body when you take to the streets. Motorcycle apparel extends to gloves, rain gear and two-piece riding suits that fit casual, dirt or street riding. Equipped to handle all sorts of terrain, two-piece riding suits offer colorful, reinforced body protection. Depending on the product line, characteristics, such as leather flex zones in the waist and knee area or plastic body-armor, may be offered. Many opt for a pair of motorcycle gloves that provide extra protection for the palm of the hand, as well as the fingers and thumb. For increased protection, choose a pair that offers wrist protection. Looking for a cool pair of shades? When shopping for motorcycle apparel, you may find sunglasses in this category, but often times, these cool motorcycle accessories are not considered apparel.

Motorcycle Boots

Since your feet need protection, too, there is a wide-range of motorcycle boots to choose from. What you want to accomplish with your motorcycle boots depends on the types of adventures you will embark on. You want to make sure that your boots provide the proper protection that you need to handle all of the resistance and shocks pertaining to bike riding. Good motorcycle boots offer convenient ankle support, as well as protection for your toes, heels and shins. Strong soles are also a plus. Make sure you choose motorcycle boots that offer breathable lining, so your feet don’t suffer from excessive perspiration.

Motorcycle Accessories

When it comes to motorcycle accessories, you will find items for yourself, as well as for your ride. Perhaps you are in need of a new face shield or bag to tuck away your sweetie’s helmet. Tail bags and saddlebags are convenient products to browse because they serve many different purposes. Easily carry your lunch to work or your camera on vacations in one of the convenient zipper compartments. Roomy selections are perfect for storing an extra motorcycle helmet.

When it comes to eye protection, you could be cooling in no time with one of the many different shield goggles and sunglasses selections. Characteristics to be on the lookout for include comfortable nosepieces, interchangeable lens, optional straps, wrap-around capabilities, as well as a carrying pouch.

Motorcycle Protective Clothing

Everything that goes in the name of protective gear may not necessarily be as safe as the claims may be. In Europe, for example, apparel has to undergo a series of lengthy tests to qualify as safety clothing. These include abrasion, tearing and impact tests. If they are passed they are CR certified. In the US, where there are no such tests all riders should acquire a set of motorcycle protective clothing by keeping the following points in mind:

1. Wear a sturdy pair of high boots and protective pants. Your pants should be reinforced at the knees and hips and the boots should be made of thick leather with flexible sole.

2. Traditional motorcycle gear has been made of leather, but thick nylon and other synthetic material are good too. If you must wear jeans wear Kevlar ones; they are more abrasion resistant. The same goes for jackets too. If it is made of leather make sure the leather is thick and the jacket’s elbows and shoulders are reinforced. Some impact protection would be ideal.

3. Get yourself a decent pair of gloves with reinforced palm patches. This is absolutely essential because palms get terribly bruised during a fall. Knitted Kevlar is a very good choice; reinforced leather works well too.

4. Wear impact protection gear. They are available separately. You can also go for motorcycle clothing with a degree of impact protection built in. This way whenever you wear clothes you have at least a degree of protection.

5. Choose the right helmet. This is absolutely imperative. The helmet is the most important protective gear that you can have, never get on to the bike without it.

At the minimum, when you are on your bike you must have the following:

a. Helmet: Make sure it is DOT certified, and fits your head snugly.

b. Eye Protection: A full-face shield, three-quarter helmet, goggles, or close-fitting eyeglasses should be used to provide adequate protection to the eye.

c. Gloves: Since we reflexively put our hands out while falling, the palms are likely to get bruised unless there is protective covering on them. This is why gloves are so important.

d. Jacket: Jackets protect the bikers against the elements and also provide some impact absorption on falling.

e. Long trousers: Long trousers can protect your legs against insects, bugs and highway debris. They also provide some impact protection against falls.

f. Above-the-ankle footwear: These cushion your feet in case of a fall; they also protect your feet against stinging insects.

Motorcycle Rims Can Add Glamour To A Bike

Motorcycle rims are like a pair of sunglasses; they can add glamour and change the way your bike looks. But you should not limit the utility of the rims to their looks. The rims play a far more important role in the way your bike runs.

There are basically two types of motorcycle rims: solid and laced. In the solid rim, the spokes as well the rim are fused to form a single, circular plate. The metal used here is usually solid aluminum.

Laced rims, on the other hand, are the conventional spoke wheels where a series of spokes are fused to the rim. The spokes add structural strength to the rim and also give the bike an individual look.

The Billet Motorcycle Wheels are also a rage. Here, the wheel unit is carved out of a single block of aluminum. What is interesting is that using computer aided designing, you can carve out really intricate spoke designs. You can also opt for a chrome finish. Billet designs can dramatically alter the look of your machine.

So what kind of rim-wheel combination is best for you?

There is no doubt that it is the laced variety. When you have spokes that attach the rim to the hub, you get better impact absorption than a solid wheel. The absorbed impact is spread evenly across the rim over a wider area because of flexibility. A solid wheel on the other hand is not flexible, so the full impact is absorbed only at the point of impact.

You also need to consider maintenance. Keep your rims in mint condition to avoid corrosion as that can lead to weak points. Since wheels are subject to a lot of stress there is always the possibility of broken spokes and punctured tubes, not to mention mishaps.

It is also a good policy to use rim locks to make sure that the tires don’t slip off the rims. You should also make sure that the rim is always aligned. One easy way of doing this is to put the bike on the centre stand and then spin the wheels. Any lateral or vertical oscillation will immediately be noticeable. You can usually knock back a wheel into shape with a hammer and a small block of wood. But if you are not up to it, take it to a mechanic and get it done.

Remember: Keep the rim in shape and your bike will cut a great figure.

Motorcycle Saddlebags Or Tank Bags Which To Get?

Riding a motorcycle these days is not only fun but with today's gas prices it is also quite economical. The only problem with riding a bike is that their is a serious lack of storage unless you happen to have a Goldwing or maybe a Harley Dresser youre going to need some saddlebags or some sort of tank bag to carry your stuff in. Their are ups and downs to both choices and some of it also depends on your motorcycle. If you have a cruiser your ideal choice is probably some sort of saddlebags or luggage type bags. For Sport Bikes the easy answer is likely to be a tank bag.

If you have a cruiser choosing a saddlebag for your ride is really a matter of taste. Their are so many too choose from its not even funny. Motorcycle saddlebags come in a variety of styles. Most are made of some type of leather or a synthetic material. Modern Saddlebags generally have a hard case liner in side which keeps the shape of the bag. When choosing a saddle bag it is best to choose something that will look good on your motorcycle. If you get something you don't like you are not as likely to use it. Bags come with studs and fringes and even locks if you want. You can choose from either permanently mounted saddle bags or ones that can easily come off the bike. I recommend you get some that can be removed easily so they can be carried in with you if you are planning to ride your bike to work or some other place where you will be away from the bike for a while. Most motorcycle saddle bags can be removed easily and put back on just as quickly. If you decide on some that mount permanently make sure they lock. Some of your more popular saddlebag makers are Saddlemen, Saddle Stow, Willie and Max, Ace, and ZR. Their are more brands than these but these are the major manufacturers for motorcycle saddlebags. Most of these are easily mounted and come with all the necessary hardware. Also T-Bags makes some really nice Sissy Bar Bags that have a decent amount of storage space. T-Bags also makes motorcycle luggage to fit most cruisers as well as sport bikes.

For sport bike riders the preference tends to be a tank bag. Since saddlebags tend to lean more towards the classic look they aren't to appealing to riders of sport bikes. Tank Bags are actually a great alternative to saddlebags, most are expandable and can carry quite a bit of stuff as wells as that most tank bags have side pockets for extra storage. Most tank bags use a magnetic mounting system in combination with a strap that ties of to the steering head of the bike. This makes it really easy to pull the tank bag of and on with out it being a big pain. This makes it easy to take off the bike and carry with you if you plan on being away from the bike for a while. Most of these bags also have a carrying handle which makes it even easier for you to carry the bag with you. Their are a lot of different tank bag sizes available so it is important to pick a size the will suit your needs. I recommend one that is expandable which will allow you to make it compact or expand it for more capacity when needed. Also when picking a tank bag you want to pick one that is water resistant in case you get caught in a down pour. Most tank bags are either made from water resistant material or come with a built in rain cover.

Motorcycle Safety Tips: They're Lifesavers!

Motorcyclists are amongst the most vulnerable in the motoring public. In any collision with a four-wheel vehicle, a motorcyclist is always at a severe disadvantage. An accident that is just a simple panel-beating exercise for a car or truck can mean death or disability for a motorcyclist. It is not difficult to lose a limb, seriously damage internal organs, or become paralysed.

Motorcycle Safety Tip #1: Buckle On That Helmet

There is often disagreement between those who believe in wearing a motorcycle helmet and those that don't. Commonsense would say it is hard to isolate one single argument from the no-helmet brigade that makes any sense. Research statistics further substantiate the case for wearing helmets, showing that huge numbers of motorcyclists escape death by wearing them.

A very common motorcycle accident scenario is a rider being thrown off and landing on their head. For those wearing a good helmet, serious head injuries can usually be averted. An ejected rider might end up with a severe headache, but at least they are alive!

Even head injuries sustained at low impact can be fatal. A recent case was reported when a stationary motorcyclist was messing around in his driveway, lost his balance, fell off the bike and hit his head on the concrete driveway. He died from the injury a few days later. Because he was not going anywhere, he did not have his helmet on. The result was tragic and could easily have been averted.

A helmet is certainly not an iron-clad guarantee that an accident or serious injury will be avoided—no safety device is. However, wearing a motorcycle helmet will certainly improve the odds of surviving a motorcycle accident.

Motorcycle Safety Tip #2: Wear Brightly-colored, Protective Clothing

Motorcyclists should always wear the appropriate gear for protection and be clearly visible to other motorists. Motorcycle accidents can be pretty horrendous. Bikers ejected from their motorcycle can skid along the bitumen, and without protective leather clothes or boots can forcibly embed rocks, glass and other objects into their flesh. This can have disastrous consequences in pain and suffering which could easily have been avoided.

Motorcycle Safety Tip #3: Keep Awake And Stay Sober

Drowsiness and fatigue can seriously impair a motorcyclist's reflexes and ability to react. Bikers should avoid riding when very fatigued and take regular short breaks from driving. Alcohol and other drugs also seriously affect judgment and should be strictly avoided when riding a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Safety Tip #4: Abide By Traffic Laws

A substantial number of motorcycle riders involved in accidents are driving without licenses or are improperly licensed. Motorcyclists should ensure their licence is always up to date, and take care to obey the traffic laws. A regular refresh of road rules and local traffic laws is highly recommended, and most importantly …… don’t speed!

Motorcycle Safety Tip #5: Bike Safety And Planning

Motorcyclists should perform a motorcycle safety inspection before each ride. Accidents often occur as a result of mechanical problems. Plan ahead when riding in a group. Determine your route in advance and make sure it is coordinated with the other riders.

Motorcycle Safety Tip #6: Continuous Learning And Improvement

A large percentage of motorcyclists involved in accidents have had no driver training. Enrolling in a motorcycle training course is a good way of developing basic riding skills. Once the basic techniques are acquired, motorcyclists can sharpen their street-riding and accident-avoidance skills by taking an defensive driving course or advanced program for motorcyclists.

Motorcyclists have a responsibility to protect themselves as far as they can. By learning motorcycle safety tips such as wearing a good helmet, eye protection, protective clothing, and good boots, bikers can be better equipped when riding. You know it makes sense!

Motorcycle Tank Bags Can Provide Extra Storage Space

If you plan to hit the road on your cruiser for a few days, then you will need all the storage space that a motorcycle can possibly afford. Realistically speaking, on its own a bike does not offer much. That is why there is a range of saddle bags and bags for the sissy bar. After you have got yourself these, what next? Motorcycle tank bags are the natural extension.

As the name suggests these bags sit around your tank. Most of them are magnetic and have ears that you can clamp in place once the bag has been positioned in the way you want. The method to fix them is simple: you simply have to hold the bags by their ears, place them the way you want to and then click the ears in place so that the position is locked.

However, these bags by virtue of sitting on your tank can often scratch the surface. This is not because the bags per se are made of abrasive material but because dirt and debris can get in between the bag and the bike surface. Quality tank bags therefore have a special padding that keeps the paint safe.

But this scratching is not just a phenomenon that happens with only the tank bag.

Saddle bags can scratch off the paint too. There are precautions you can take to minimize the chances of scratching. The most obvious thing to do is keep the surface that’s touching your bike clean so that there is no abrasive grit to do the scratching.

Also, never place the bag on the tank and then move it around to get the right fit. This movement is bound to cause scratching.

Your best bet to prevent scratching is to actually put a protective material between the bag and the bike so that there is no contact between the two. One solution available in the market is a rubbery mesh. This material lets the magnet of the bag cling on to the bike and yet forms a protective layer between the two. This material is both cheap and easily available. Get yourself a roll and cut an outline of the bag’s bottom on it. Then put this cut piece between the two for a snug fit.

This will give you extra storage space without spoiling the looks of your bike.

Motorcycle Windshields Do More Than Add Oomph To A Bike

Motorcycle windshields do not just add oomph to a bike, they do much more. Among other things, they intercept discarded cigarette butts, bugs and other assorted highway missiles. They also conduct the all important task of redirecting airflow away from the rider’s head and torso thus saving him from wind fatigue on long hauls.

Little wonder then that windshields are the most sought after accessory in the market.
The demand has also spawned a whole range of windshields, each claiming its own USP. However, before buying one you must keep the following five points in mind:

1. The Fit: Try and get a windshield that’s made by your own bike manufacturer. They are more likely to fit your bike seamlessly. You can also try the universal shield. This type is lightweight, handlebar-mounted and can be fitted on almost any bike. Universal windshields provide just a very basic shield between you and air.

2. The Plastic: It is important that the plastic has good optical properties. Distortion around the edges or near the curvature of a shield can be especially dangerous.

3. The Size: Bigger windshields do not always mean better protection. A high windshield might work well to block the icy wind but during the rains, it could become a wet wall that you can’t look over. Short windshields are good because they let the cool breeze fan your face in hot weather, but they can cause havoc to your helmet when the wind is sharp. Much depends on the kind of bike you have and how you sit on it. The best is to sit on a bike and then check how the windshield will work.

4. The Height: A windshield that sits just below your line of vision while seated comfortably is a good option. You should be able to see over it without straining and yet be comfortable dropping your head down to look through the glass. In any case the height at which you are most comfortable is probably the right height. Sit before several windshields and you’ll know which works for you.

5. The Mounting System: Check the mounting system before you buy the windshield. Mounting hardware can vary radically from shield to shield. While putting up your windshields make sure you don't bind cables or block either lighting or brake lines. Give controls and mirrors ample space. Make sure that nothing touches the windshield when the fork is fully compressed. Also make sure that the shield doesn't interfere with steering. Take a short test ride, but take it slow.

Motoring Tips – 10 Ways To Reduce The Cost Of Driving

The cost of motoring has risen significantly in recent years, particularly with the rapid rise in petrol prices. There are however a number of ways in which you can reduce the cost of motoring. Try following our Top 10 Tips below and you could be driving further for less.

1. Get the best deal on petrol prices. The price of petrol can vary by as much as 10p a litre in local areas. PetrolPrices.com is a free service allowing people to search for the cheapest petrol in their area. They review 8,000 prices daily to ensure that their information is as up-to-date as possible.

2. Drive in the highest gear. Driving at high speeds in low gears can result in 45% more fuel being consumed than needed.

3. Keep your tyres pumped up to the correct level. Fuel economy can be improved by up to 5% by keeping your tyres inflated to the correct level. The recommended pressure for your tyres can be found in your vehicle handbook and, in some cases, next to the air device at petrol stations.

4. Don’t drive erratically. Constantly accelerating and braking consumes more fuel than smoother driving. Look ahead to anticipate potential road blockages which will reduce the need for sudden breaking. For peak efficiency don’t push the accelerator down further than one-quarter of the total foot travel.

5. Save money on car insurance. Internet comparison sites, such as Confused.com, are an excellent way to find the cheapest quote. Car insurance quotes can vary by hundreds of pounds so huge savings can be made.

6. Find cheaper parking. Many people now rent out their driveway or garage to commuters on a long-term basis. YourParkingSpace.co.uk is a site where cheaper long-term parking can be found.

7. Don’t overuse the air conditioning or heater. Overheating the car and then having to open the windows is a waste of energy and lowers your fuel economy.

8. Avoid short journeys. Driving short distances is significantly less fuel efficient than longer journeys. For example, every time your car engine is turned on it is equivalent to idling your engine for one minute. Instead set time aside to walk short distances.

9. Share a journey. Sharing a lift into work with one other person slashes your fuel bill by half by allowing you to share the cost of driving. Liftshare.org has over 130,000 members and provides a way of finding someone traveling in your direction.

10. Close your windows. Having windows open at high speeds creates significant drag meaning that more fuel is used. Even if closing your windows means the air conditioning is required it is still more fuel efficient.

Mountain Bike Brands

A newcomer to mountain bikes would be forgiven for thinking they are all pretty much the same. If you know your stuff, however, you will know that there are lots of mountain bike brands which vary in both quality and price. Although mountain bike brands originate in many different parts of the world, the best ones are known worldwide. Take Claud Butler for example. This is a brand originating in the UK, but its top quality and lightweight frames are well known and respected in the mountain bike community.

If you’re setting out to buy a new mountain bike you’ll soon notice the sometimes enormous difference between prices for different mountain bike brands. While at first you might think you are simply paying more for the famous name of a certain brand, there is a lot more at stake than this. When you are out mountain biking, you’ll sometimes come across an area of terrain which requires you to hop off your bike and carry it on your shoulder for a short distance. If you have a more expensive bike at the top end of the market, you’ll be able to pick it up in one hand and jog with it for the required distance if you want to.

If you have a cheaper version, you’ll find it to be weighty and much more awkward to carry. It’s this kind of difference that you’re paying for. The more expensive, better quality mountain bike brands have lighter alloy frames that make biking much easier and more enjoyable. Suffice to say you can go faster on a lighter bike than you can on a heavier framed one.

Whatever brand you choose, the brand itself often only applies to certain parts of the bike. Sometimes it will only apply to the actual frame – the rest of the items that go to make up a complete bike will be made by other manufacturers. For example, perhaps the best known name in gear systems for lots of mountain bike brands is Shimano. Within that range there are different varieties, and the best mountain bike brands will use the best and most expensive gear system.

Buying a mountain bike isn’t always an easy prospect. You need to consider which brand will serve you best, and which accessories have been used to make up each bike underneath the overall brand name.

It’s worth taking your time to make the best choice for you.

Mountain Bike Jumps

Mountain biking is an exciting and fun sport that has evolved into one of the most popular sports around. Many people want to participate in the sport, but would like to be able go right out back and have their own mountain bike course available. Creating mountain bike jumps can be accomplished and bring the sport right into your home.

Learning how to make proper jumps can help mountain bikers be safe out on the road. Practicing techniques when making jumps can also assist in the biker being able to stay in control and keep their speed up while riding the trails. Making mountain bike jumps to practice with can fun and a great learning opportunity. Some things to consider when deciding to create mountain bike jumps can include how much space is actually available for the jump. There must be enough space in front of the jump and behind it in order to have room to pick up speed over the jump. Also, keep in mind that a jump placed next to a large object has the potential risk for injury.

In order to create mountain bike jumps, you will need shovels and rakes. Mountain bike jumps can be any size. Even small ones are a good way to begin to learn the proper technique of jumping. It may be best to start small and then build bigger.

Mountain bike jumps can be created by digging a hole and taking the dirt and piling it up. The hole can be made to slope so that it can also be used as a landing spot. The shape of the jump will be determined by how the dirt is placed. Any shape can be made when creating a home mountain bike jump. Make sure that the landings on either side of the jump are packed down well so that jumping is smoother.

Dirt can also be brought in and mountain bike jumps can be made from the dirt. Again, it is important to pack the dirt so that the jump is solid. If there is not enough space for a large jump, several small jumps can be made and these are a good way to learn about jumping over several obstructions. Mountain bike jumps are really very easy to create and maintain. Not only can these be a great way to learn the ins and outs of mountain biking, they are also fun and bring a much loved sport right into your own backyard.

Mountain Bike Racing

Mountain bike racing is a demanding sport, as anyone who has attempted it will know. If you’re thinking of trying it for the first time it’s important to make sure you are prepared for the demands it will put on you physically. This will ensure you are able to enjoy the race without running the risk of injury.

If it’s been years since you have even ridden a bike, you will need to get some practice in before you even think about going mountain bike racing. If you don’t, getting saddle sore on race day will be the least of your problems. To begin with, a regular program of cycling will build up your fitness levels and strengthen your leg muscles. This is vital if you are going to stand the pace when mountain bike racing.

Cycling on the road is an ideal way to begin to improve your fitness levels, but as soon as you can you should venture off road to get used to the rougher terrain that is the key feature of mountain bike racing. Experiment with gears and speed as you begin to gain confidence over the terrain, and try and ride different areas during both wet and dry conditions. This will prepare you far better for the race itself, as you will know how to handle your bike depending on what conditions you’ll be up against.

Just as you would give your car the once over before setting out on a long journey, so you should also check your bike over to make sure it’s race ready. Make sure the tyres are pumped up adequately and everything is well oiled for the best performance. Loose chains are a real hazard in mountain bike racing, as they can easily get caught on a loose branch or stick as you go flying along. Do the best you can to ensure everything is in tip top condition. Be ready for whatever the weather may throw at you during the race. Wear comfortable sneakers and lightweight clothing that will dry easily if it should rain. As you gain experience you will find a combination of clothing that suits you best. You may even want to invest in proper cycle clothing. Mountain bike racing is a great way to spend a few hours and improve your fitness levels at the same time. Preparation is the key to having the best time, so make sure you’re ready for anything.

Mountain Bike Rims

Depending on the discipline of mountain biking undertaken, the type of mountain bike rims on the bike will either help or harm the rider. For cross-country, freerider and jumping, sturdier, heavier mountain bike rims will help keep the bike in service. However, for some forms of trail riding where less weight and better maneuverability is desired, lighter rims may be a better choice. In most cases the front and back mountain bike rims are matched, not only for appearance but also for stability. A heavier wheel on one end or the other can throw off the balance of the entire bike and cause major problems when performing jumps or tricks on the bike. Choosing mountain bike rims based on the type of riding to be done, is more than a personal choice. It is also necessary to accomplish the ride.

Some mountain cross riders, as well as dirt jumpers may use different types of tires. If they are going to go from one type of riding to another frequently, they will usually have the different tires mounted on different mountain bike rims for quick changes to the second style. One of the aspects of mountain biking is the riders being hard on their bikes. Especially downhill runners who frequently confront jumps and falls, the mountain bike rims are going to take a beating more severe than simply casual riding down the city sidewalks. If the rim cannot withstand the abuse, it will bend in one or more spots making the bike impossible to ride. It can also cause adverse effects to the tire, brake pads and the chain.

Keeping the spokes at the proper tension on mountain bike rims is also important and some riders do this by simply listening. A dull thud when tapped with a screwdriver is an indication the spoke may need tightened. By appropriately adjusting the spokes according to manufacturer specifications, damage to the mountain bike rims can be diminished. Even a slight bend on the edge of the mountain bike rims can create problems if it interferes with the brake pads. Having to jump over a small dimple or protrusion can quickly ruin the pads, making the bike more difficult to stop. Since the mountain bike rims are the one item on the bike that is going faster than everything else, anything that could cause them to come to a sudden, unexpected stop should be repaired or replaced immediately to protect the rest of the bike, including the rider.

Mountain Bike Shocks

Mountain bikes are extremely popular worldwide, and it is important if you have a mountain bike to understand how your bike works and what each part is used for, not only so that you are more informed and knowledgeable in general, but also in case your bike happens to break down at some point, as with this knowledge you will be aware of what the problem is and how to fix it. Especially since when you go mountain biking you tend to go out into the middle of nowhere, out to desolate and rural areas where there is usually no one else around, and so you really need to have the proper knowledge in case something unfortunate like this does happen on your trip.

One of the most important aspects of all of any mountain bike is the mountain bike shocks. Mountain bike shocks are part of the overall suspension, and they work by performing two basic functions. For one, they dampen spring oscillation, and secondly, they aid in ride control overall. Mountain bike shocks aid in ride control by keeping the bike manageable during regular driving, and they do this by keeping the tires down on the ground and not allowing them to bounce after hitting a bump. This allows for greater ease of both cornering and handling.

You need to take proper care of your mountain bike shocks, and make sure that if at any point they need to be fixed or replaced that you do so immediately. There are many benefits that you will receive from replacing worn shocks, including: helping to reduce wear on other suspension components, help to maintain dynamic wheel alignment, help to prevent premature tire wear over a period of time, and help to prevent premature wear of suspension parts such as the ball joints and steering linkage.

When it comes to proper maintenance of your mountain bike, the best thing is to do your research and be informed so that you can perform at least the general maintenance yourself however you do always have the option of hiring a professional to do the work for you. If you choose to go this route, then you will want to bring your bike in for a routine examination every few months or so, more often if you go mountain biking quite frequently. By taking proper care of your bike not only will it last you a great deal longer, but as well you will be further ensuring your own safety, as the best way to mountain bike is on a sturdy and safe bike.

Mountain Bike Stand

One of the toughest parts of mountain biking is not necessarily the trail on which it is ridden or the style the rider chooses. Keeping the bike in superior condition and repair is essential to the success of any style of mountain biking. Kick-stands are out of the question for repair work and finding the right mountain bike stand with which to hold the bike for work, should be something every cyclist needs to do. Finding the right mountain bike stand may take some time, but there a few things to look for when considering a purchase. Obviously, price will be a major concern, but spending hundreds, and possibly thousands of dollars on a quality mountain bike, anything left over in the budget should be applied to a quality stand. A mountain bike stand should be freestanding, meaning it can stand on its own, under the weight of the bike when attached, without fear it will fall over, regardless of the terrain on which it is used. Many riders carry a foldable mountain bike stand with them for competition and when needed it can be quickly set up beside the car and used to effect repairs. The stands with a tripod stand are the most useful at remaining upright on tough ground.

Look for a mountain bike stand that has a single lever quick release mechanism to hold the bike upright. Gone are the days when a bike was turned upside down to make repairs. With the grip working similar to vice grip pliers they should be easily adjustable to the size of the crossbar and be able to support the weight of the bike. The grip should also have a single, quick release mechanism to make removing the bike easy, no matter how much it weighs. Ideally, the mountain bike stand will be adjustable up and down to make working on the bike more convenient and comfortable. The adjustment should be easy with a single release on a telescoping pole to make moving the bike up and down easy for one person to accomplish. The rider should not have to struggle or ask for help to get the bike to a level at which work can be performed. While many mountain bike stand prices are under $100, a quality stand can cost over $300 and depending on the amount of work a person will do on their bike, the higher priced, better quality mountain bike stand may be a better bargain in the long run.

Mountain Bike Trails

Choosing the right mountain bike trails can be quite a challenge especially if you are still a beginner. Note mountain biking is a physically demanding sport and you need to have the right amount of strength and stamina to conquer specific types of mountain bike trails. If you are still a beginner, do not overestimate your capacity to negotiate mountain bike trails. There is really no point risking some serious injuries when negotiating a mountain bike trail, so be very careful in choosing one. There are plenty of mountain bike trails that are suitable for beginners. Forget about those difficult trails that end up at the top of the mountain. You can tackle those types of trails later when you have gained enough experience in the field. To stay on the safe side, choose a trail that loops back to your starting point. Now, don’t think that these types of trails are too easy or not challenging enough for you. There are plenty of looping trails that pose great challenges to mountain bikers.

To choose the right type of mountain bike trail, study the routes carefully. Evaluate your skills and capabilities handling the trails. You will need to match your skills and energies with the difficulty of the trails so be honest to yourself when making an assessment. If you think that you cannot negotiate a trail that is full of rocks and uphill climbs, then by all means don’t take that trail. There is no pint of punishing yourself by taking these types of trails.

Aside from selecting a looping mountain bike trail, you need to determine the distance that you need to ravel. If the trail is too long for you to negotiate all the way, you can arrange for someone to pick you up at a certain point of the trail. Now, just because you did not finish the entire loop doesn’t mean that you are not good at what you do. Always remember that as a beginner, you need to go through a period of adjustment. You cannot really expect yourself to do long distance biking early on so be patient. You will have plenty of time to do long distance biking once you are well-adjusted to your routine. As a beginner, it would be a good idea for you to negotiate the trail with a companion. Going through a mountain bike trail with a friend is not only safer; it is also a lot more fun to negotiate these trails with someone else.

Mountain Bike Tyers

If you are one of those people who are fond of mountain biking, it would be best for you to learn how to change your mountain bike tires. Changing mountain bike tires is not really that difficult as long as you have the right tools and knowledge of the different parts of your bike. To help you change your mountain bike tires, here are some tips for you.

Before you can change your mountain bike tires, you need to you need to remove the old tires first. If you are using a newer model of mountain bike, find the quick-release lever on each axle of the bike. Loosen the mountain bike tire by flipping open the release lever. Once the mountain bike tire is loose, you can already pull it free from the bike. On the other hand, if you are using an older model of mountain bikes, changing its wheels may take more than just loosing the release lever. Older models of mountain bikes use axle nuts to hold the wheel in place. To loosen the axle nut, you need to use an adjustable wrench. Work your way through the nut carefully. Once the nuts are loose, you can now pull the mountain bike tire free. After freeing the tire from the bike, completely deflate the tire so that you can easily remove the tube inside the tire. To remove the tube from the tire, you will need to use some mountain bike tire tools. Pry the tire away from the rim to remove it from the rim. Take care not to damage the inner tube when you prey the tire out from the rim.

After removing the old tire from the bike, you may now install new ones. Take a new mountain bike tire and carefully slip it on the rim. This process can be a bit tricky so pay close attention to what you are doing. If you cannot slip the tire into the rim using your bare hands, try using mountain bike tire tools. Work carefully to prevent snapping the inner tube and tire in place. Snapping the inner tube and tire tube into place may cause breaks in the inner tire tube. Once the inner tire tube is damaged, you will need to remove the wheel again and install another inner tire tube so be very careful. You don’t really want to do things all over again. Now, when everything is already in its proper places, you may not install the tire on the mountain bike.

Mountain Bike Wheels

Mountain biking is a very popular sport that continues to grow every year. More and more people are discovering this fast paced sport and are looking into joining the sport by purchasing their own mountain bikes. It can be confusing when beginning to research the different types of bikes available for mountain biking. The difference in mountain bike wheels is one variation in the types of bikes available.

Mountain bikes can come in many different styles. For many it is a matter of what type of bike is most comfortable for them. This is also a choice in the type of pedals selected for the mountain bike. Stores that carry mountain bikes can be a great resource when investigating the type of bike needed for the rider. Mountain bike wheels, too come in several sizes, and can make a difference in what the rider is looking for.

Mountain bike wheels come in two sizes, the 29 inch and the 26 inch wheel size. The 29 inch is becoming a far more common mountain bike wheels size, and many more bikes are made with this size wheel. Mountain bike wheels that are 29 inch can be a good choice for riders. This size means that the overall bike is taller working well for riders that need a bigger bike. This size of mountain bike wheels can also be good for better traction and ability to go over disturbances in the terrain. This size wheel can take on larger bumps and lumps in the road. For many bikers this size of mountain bike wheels is a good choice.

The 26 inch mountain bike wheels is what the industry began producing mountain bikes with. This has been the common size for many years. Because the wheel is smaller, this can be a good selection for riders that aren’t as tall. This size wheel is also good because as it is smaller, the entire bike is lighter. For many who have been mountain biking for years, this is what they are use to using. In some cases, the difference in mountain bike wheels boils down to what will work best for the rider. It may benefit a novice mountain biker to try out both styles of wheels to determine which will work best for them. Mountain bikes will continue to evolve as the sport grows, and mountain bike wheels will also change as the industry determines what consumers are looking for in a mountain bike.

Mountain Bikes

A mountain bike is a bicycle specifically designed to withstand the toughness and roughness of a cross country ride. Compared to road bikes and BMX bikes, these mountain bikes usually have broader frames and tires to accommodate the rough road and terrain. These bikes usually have either front or rear suspension, depending on the preference of the rider. In some cases, both ends have suspensions. These are for the comfort of the rider while he is jostled as he traverses the rough road.

The broader and more knobby tires of the mountain bike are called knobbies because of the bumps and protrusions on them. These bumps or knobs are very efficient in “gripping” the rough terrain and maintaining their hold on the rough road. The smoother tires of road bikes cannot go up a rough road since these will just skid on it.

The different types of mountain bikes are usually categorized depending on their suspension. A full rigid mountain bike is one that has no suspension at all. Instead of the usual front suspension, it a fixed fork very similar to those of road bikes. A hard tail mountain bike is one that does have front suspension and does not have any rear ones. Some bikers prefer these kinds of set up since sometimes rear suspension can make the rider exert more effort because of the flex it gives.

A soft tail mountain bike is the kind with rear suspension but these are activated by the movement of the frame itself and not by the pivots. The rear suspension of these kinds of bikes is not as pronounced as those in the full suspension category. full suspension mountain bike has suspension in both ends, the front and the rear. This is a pretty comfortable bike to ride in rough road because the bike literally cushions you, at least most of the time.

The advantage of using a mountain bike is that you are physically fit and can go anytime to visit the great outdoors. It gives a great cardiovascular work out for the heart and burns a lot of calories also. One thing you must remember when you are out biking is to always wear a helmet. The helmet has saved lot s of lives already and it just might save your own. Helmets can withstand a pretty severe crash. Even if biking only in the streets near your home, always wear a helmet.

Mountain Biking 101: What You Need To Fall In Love With This Sport

Summer's just around the corner and that means all kinds of outdoor fun! This season, why not commit to trying something new? Mountain and trail biking! A great form of exercise for all levels, mountain and trail biking is a terrific way to get out and enjoy all that nature offers.

If you think you're ready to give it a try, here are some things you'll need:

A bike. Known as MTB or ATB (Mountain or All-Terrain) bikes, they range in price from $300 to well over $2,000. As a novice, start by renting a bike (much more affordable at around $40 a day) to see if you like the sport, and the bike model.

A bike rack. Unless you live on the mountain, you're going to have to drive to your biking destination. Bike racks come in all different styles, from roof-mounted racks from manufacturers like Swangman and Thule, to hitch-mounted carriers like the one available for Isuzu SUVs.

A helmet. While comfy clothes suited to the weather is always recommended (stay away from loose pants that can get caught in the bike's gears), a helmet is a must. They can be rented or bought, but they are invaluable in the event of an accident, especially in areas where emergency medical help isn't just a hop, skip, and jump away.

A rehydration system. This could be anything from water bottles strapped on the bike, to back-mounted rehydration systems. It's not about how you rehydrate, it's that you do it often.

A cell phone. Just in case of and emergency, bring a cell phone.

Trail maps. Many can be downloaded from the internet or bought at the local ski resort. As a novice, stick to clear, well-marked trails. Keep the map handy in case of an emergency, or in the event you get lost.

Most importantly, have fun. Take as many breaks as you'd like to stop and explore the idyllic setting or to catch your breath. Bike at your own pace and enjoy the well-deserved break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Mountain Biking - History

People use bicycles for many different reasons. They are a great means of transport for getting to and from work, you can fit your shopping into the baskets available to attach to the front, and they provide a wonderful way to travel when on holiday and exploring different areas. People have always ridden off road as well as on it, but the history of mountain biking really begins more than thirty years ago, in the 1970’s. Modern bike designs have made the sport more accessible to more people, and the history of mountain biking certainly shows it is now even more popular than ever.

But although mountain biking is now enjoyed all over the world, it began life in California, America. A group of cycle enthusiasts decided to try out some downhill runs on bikes that would now seem antiquated to many of us. The dirt tracks were much the same as many mountain bike race courses today, but the bikes have changed considerably over the intervening years. Those races became famous, and before long similar races were taking place along tracks at locations in many different countries.

As new materials and ways of building bikes have come into existence, it has become easier to build a bike that is capable of withstanding everything a rough off road terrain has to throw at it. Stronger lighter frames and better gears have made mountain biking easier for more people to attempt. The history of mountain biking shows that the earliest riders began to adapt their bikes to get the best from those downhill runs and routes, and so the mountain bikes that we know today began to evolve.

At the time, the only type of bicycle you could buy was intended to be ridden on the road. Although people did ride off road it wasn’t popular enough to warrant a bike designed specifically for that use. But the bikers in California changed all that. The history of mountain biking began with them, and they began to rethink the way that bicycles were made in order to create a design that could handle all the obstacles and conditions the off road trails could throw at it. So the next time you grab hold of your own mountain bike and go for a ride – perhaps across a muddy field, or down a steep slippery slope on those knobbly tires – you should think of the pioneers of the 1970’s.

Mud Flaps and Mud Guards Prevent A Potential Accident

Rocks, sticks and debris meet their doom when they hit a mud guard. There's plenty of other benefits to slapping-on a set of mud guards, including:

- Cleaner fenders that'll save you a car wash or two

- Dent and ding protection that preserves your paint

- Sweet looks that go from mud-running master to smooth-style cruising

- Durable, long-lasting materials that stand-up to virtually any barrage

Cleanliness – it's godliness for your vehicle

Nobody likes that telltale sign they've been off-roadin' or trolling through puddles when you've only been cruising the streets. There's nothing decorative about the resulting splatter spread on your wheel wells, fenders and doors, either. By the time you get a chance to spray the mud off yourself or run your vehicle through the local touch-free car wash, that dirt is caked-on and dried like spackle.

Any mud guard, splash guard or mud flap stops the cycle of splatter marks. In fact, a mud guard keeps the mess contained in the wheel well–out of sight and out of mind. Plus, mud is more likely to just fall off if it cakes inside the wheel well or on the back of the mud guard. Most times, you'll just need a few minutes with a garden sprayer to dislodge the dirt and get back to a showroom shine. By keeping the splatter away, your truck or SUV stays ready for any on or off-road adventure.

A guide to mud guard protection

There's a lot more than mud that can fly-up and hit your paint, and they do much more than cause a mess. Think of all the obstructions you see on or off road that tires could be shooting right at your doors and fenders: rocks, sticks, random metal pieces, tire treads and even roadkill. A good set of mud guards acts like an all-star goalie with all the kick-saves you need to keep your paint pristine. Dings, dents and chips meet a brick wall of coverage.

Don't forget about potential damagers that are much more difficult to see and steer around. Sometimes it's freshly-painted lane lines or turn arrows. It might be new asphalt or tar that isn't quite dry. The corner cutting of a lackadaisical road crew can rob a few hours of your time, especially if enough tar or road paint makes its way onto your fenders. Thankfully, mud guards turn back the assault of these potential paint damagers, saving you time, energy, and rubbing compound.

A reference on mud guard and mud flap looks

Whether you spend your weekends churning through the deepest muck, or shuttling the kids to and from soccer with a side trip to the mini golf place, a nice set of mud guards or mud flaps can give your vehicle the look of an off-road commander. Or, a super long and flexible set of mud flaps helps you blend in with any convoy of 18-wheelers, which use these flaps to deflect costly windshield-wrecking rocks tossed at top speed.

Some mud guards offer not only serious protection, but eye-catching ornamentation, too. These include steel or aluminum sheet mud guards that offer premium gleam and rigid protection. While they look great, they can be quite troublesome if you're wheel well-deep in the mess with your mud guards digging-in. Then again, if you're that deep in the mud, you're probably in trouble anyway. Best to stay on the hardball with a set of these metal mud guards.

Looking for the pinnacle of mud guard looks? Many of AutoAnything's mud guards can be color-matched to your vehicle's finish. That's because they employ a textured surface that receives paint without the need for primer. Basic colors can be done at home; any paint tone can be matched by a local shop. The finished product blends seamlessly with the fender and wheel well shape of your vehicle, giving you an extra dose of custom looks the other rigs on the road don't have.

The basics of mud guard materials

Mud guards are offered in two basic material styles: sheet metal and rubber or rubber-composite. Both bring durability and longevity to your wheel wells, but they have a few distinct differences.

Rubber/rubber-composite mud guards and mud flaps

They can be a flexible mud flap, or a stiff mud guard. Either way, rubber and rubber-composite guards bring the rigidity you need to thwart debris, and the durability to last through the rigors of life on your wheel well. Certain rubber mud guards come ready to paint match with your vehicle's original color.

One issue with flexible rubber mud flaps is sail. At high speeds, wind resistance blows the flaps out of position to reject the full compliment of rocks, mud and moisture. That's why a premium flap-style mud guard employs bottom weights and/or a specialized frame that limits sail when you need coverage most.

Sheet metal mud guards

Offered in both stainless steel and aluminum, sheet metal mud guards are usually best for decoration use only. Sure, they'll stop the splatter tossed rocks and even small-caliber bullets, but they can be a liability if they get caught in soft ground. Still, there's no other mud guards packing an extreme shine such as the one displayed by these. If looks and on-road protection are your goal, this is the way to go.

MX-Ray Sailboat

Very fast, monohull single-hander

The MX-Ray sailboat is one of those sailboats that lots of dinghy sailors want to know about, but evidently not enough wanted to buy, as it is no longer made. With a top speed of 20 knots, the ability to plane in winds as low as 6 knots, this tiny sailboat or sailing dinghy is truly amazing.

How come it is so fast? Well, it is similar in concept to the Moth sailboats, which have been used in international sailboat racing for years. Like the Moth, the e MX-Ray sailboat has a very narrow hull, giving a small wetted area, but widens out above the waterline so the crew can sit out to counterbalance the force on the sail.

In the Moth, which was normally wooden, a trampoline was mounted on the hull, but the MX-Ray sailboat is plastic, so it is molded to provide the space for the sailor to sit out. This is how it gets the name – well the Ray part. Looked on from above, the MX-Ray sailboat looks like a stingray.

Unlike most single-handers, the e MX-Ray sailboat has a lot of sail. Like many modern high-speed sailboats, it has a bowsprit so that a large foresail can be carried despite the short length of the hull.

Not only is there a mainsail with a deep roach, but also a jib, genoa, with stowing tube and a spinnaker. With this much sail, it is no surprise that the e MX-Ray sailboat is very fast, and can leave Lasers well behind.

The MX-Ray sailboat is made from advanced materials, with a carbon fiber mast and bowsprit and daggerboard. This is fine with a new boat, but now that you cannot buy a new one, getting a replacement for a broken mast could be a problem these days. Of course, these carbon fiber parts are expensive.

The basic specification of the MX-Ray sailboat is: LOA: 12 feet 11 inches Beam: 8 feet, 2 feet 6 inches at the waterline Draft: 2 feet 8 inches Weight: 175 lb.

The MX-Ray sailboat was a remarkable design, able to give plenty of excitement to those that want to go really fast but have a small budget.

My First Car - Pimpin My Ride

I pimped my first car by accident: literally by accident. My first car was a 1971 dodge challenger and I was driving home from the lake when I spun out and dented the wheel on a cement island. When I bought the car it came with the stock wheels and the tires were fairly worn. I needed to replace the dented wheel anyway so why not go all the way and get a whole new set. Since the wheels were slightly larger then the originals I'd need some new treads as well. This was to be the first of many expenses I would cover with this car. Most of which unfortunately were not of the pimping kind.

I purchased a set of 5 spoke chrome wheels and some Goodrich radials. I was a teenager just out of school so I had a limited budget, which I had just spent. Money from a lawsuit when a truck clipped me: but that's another story. Anyway I loved how the new wheels looked. After a few days I noticed that the rest of the car looked a little plain compared to those shining rims. I went out and purchased some pin stripping tape and got to work. Several rolls later and just before my fingers seized up I had a nice set of pinstripes. I was quite proud of myself, especially since I was a rank amateur at anything automotive. So I gave myself a pat on the back hopped in my shiny wheeled pin striped ride and laid a nice long patch of rubber to celebrate.

It wasn't long before I noticed that the interior was looking a bit boring compared to the outside. I loved the stock three-spoke steering wheel but decided to go with a new polished wood steering wheel. I found some great seat covers and completed the interior transformation. Good thing I'd managed to get some overtime at work. So once again I smoked the tires while resting comfortably in my pimping new seat covers with my hands firmly gripped around the varnished mahogany steering wheel.

Things were going great until I pulled up nest to my friend one day. I couldn't hear him because his car was thumping like herd of stampeding herd of elephants. After he drove off I realized I had to do something about my anemic stock stereo system. Back to work to ask for more overtime. Luckily the mill was actually busy at the time. Well a few weeks later I was tearing out the dashboard and installing my new Pioneer stereo, mounting the speakers in the front doors and the back windowsill, and bolting down the amps and boom box in the trunk. One more time I sat in those cushy seat covers and fired up my pimped out ride. I was rumbling and thumping as I peeled out from the driveway. The neighbors must have loved me then.

Sadly that was the end of my pimping adventures with my first car. After that the old Challenger wanted a little too much attention; brake jobs, blown cylinder heads, new carburetor. I never could keep up long enough to take it that next level. About a year later I sold her.

When my daughter gets her first car and wants to throw in a DVD player with my money of course I'll just sit her down and tell her "I pimped my first car..."
