Retaining Motorcycle & Car Number Plates
Upgrading your vehicle but want to keep your registration number? Have you bought another private number plate but want to keep your old one too? If you are in a situation like this and are confused about what to do, why not put your registration on “retention”. Retaining number plates is a facility which enables registration numbers to be taken off vehicles and kept on a V778 document, commonly known as a retention certificate. A V778 is a green certificate that is issued by the DVLA when a registration number is transferred off a vehicle. Your registration can be held on retention indefinitely and renewed on an annual basis for £25.
Only the registered keeper of the vehicle can apply to retain the registration number. If you want to retain a number plate, your vehicle must be taxed and have a valid MOT, if applicable. Applications to retain number plates may be considered if the tax disc has expired no more than 12 months ago, providing vehicles have a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) and there is no gap between the tax disc expiring and the SORN commencing.
Retaining number plates is easy. You will need form V778/1 which is available from the DVLA or in any Post Office, and provides information about the retention process. Your completed form should be sent to the DVLA, either by post or in person to your local DVLA office with the following:
• The V5/V5C (commonly know as the log book) for the vehicle the registration number is currently assigned to.
• An MOT test certificate if applicable.
• The fee for retaining a number plate. This is currently £105 which includes an £80 assignment fee and a £25 retention fee. This is payable to the DVLA.
When the details have been confirmed, a new age related registration number will be issued to your vehicle free of charge, and a replacement licence disc will be sent displaying the new registration. Where possible the vehicle will be issued with the registration number that it gave up as the result of the initial transfer. A V948 certificate will also be issued to you which enables you to have acrylic number plates produced to display the new registration.
If your vehicle was registered before 1963 it will be issued with a replacement registration number that is has no age identifier. If this is the case the new registration number will be non transferable. Dateless number plates (ones which have no age identifier) can be sold for vast amounts of money, so the inability to transfer a replacement registration number means that people cannot continually sell their replacement marks for profit. It’s difficult to imagine, but Hyundai worries that even if it has one of the highest customer faithfullness ratings in the industry, attracting new purchasers into the showroom has been a real challenge. The new Sonata slogan is: “A Hyundai you’ve never seen before" and it is true that the Sonata which was redesigned has more power, more space and better fit and finish than it has ever had previously.
Its Advantages are:
- Acceleration
- The possibility to avoid accidents
- Comfort and convenience
- Gas mileage
There are two acceptable disadvantages:
- Suspension noise
- Handling
Reliability and Maintenance
The Sonata is easy to take care of, with very little in the way of programmed maintenance until 100,000 miles is reached, unlike oil changes at regular intervals.
It is backed by one of the longest powertrainn warranties in the automotive industry at 10 years or 100,000 miles.
Performance and Handling
The new Sonata is adequately equipped with a standard 4-cylinder which offers 162HP. The 3.3-liter V6 with 234HP is smooth but responsive and reaches average speed with little effort.
Acceleration is brisk in the four-cylinder and it is surprising in the V6. Hyundai officials say the V6 will turn 0-60 miles per hour times of about 7.5 seconds, with a maximum speed of 130 mph. Shifts are executed easily with the five-speed manual, and the front tires are chirped even more easily. Kicking down for passing with minimal hesitation, the Shiftronic automatic transmission moves between gears smoothly. When the engine bumps up against redline, and it declines to downshift at all, leaving that to the driver's preferences,in manual mode, the Shiftronic will upshift automatically.
It provides more room and power than previous years. However, there is a least favourite feature, cheap interior look with fewer features, and new external redesign. But let’s see the positive aspects of Hyundai sonata.
Even if the interior seems cheap and bare compared to 2002-2005 models, seats are comfortable and the general aspect is all right for those who prefer simplicity. The on road performance and handling of this car is very good.
The Hyundai Sonata's new interior marks a major step up the quality ladder. You can notice some rough edges on a few plastic molds and a less-than-lustrous finish on some dash panels. But the overall look is highly competitive with most in the class and better than some.
Three round dials in the hooded instrument cluster communicate the necessities of operational data to the driver, with the largest the speedometer which is positioned inside a polished circle. To its left is the tachometer, and to its right conjoined water temperature and fuel gauges. In the lower dash to the left of the steering column are a bank of five switch plugs, one of them is the dash-light rheostat, and there also can be seen a flip-down storage bin. The ignition key slides into a slot placed properly, in the dash to the right of the steering column instead of on the steering column itself.

Think about the recommended Motorcycle Safety Foundation procedure for crossing a 2x4 in the road or hitting a "pothole" that is 2" or so deep... you should try to cross at or near a 90-degree angle, stand up on the foot pegs to use your legs as shock absorbers, roll on the throttle a little to lighten the front-end as you cross the obstacle (and rolling off as you cross it to avoid throwing the obstacle up behind you), clear over the obstacle, and ride on.
With a chopper the procedure is slightly different. The greater than normal rake, extended front forks, far-forward controls, minimal (if any) rear shock travel, and low ground clearance requires more faith and strength and will take some practice to be able to complete the procedure safely. Of course, the best course of action is avoid obstacles completely (they say chopper riders are the most vigilant road surface scanners) but that just isn't realistic on today's roads.

Riding Skills: Effects Of Strong Crosswinds On Choppers
During fall riding, we have to deal with strong and gusty winds. I suppose you could set a limit and say "I won't ride if the winds gust above 30 MPH... but what fun would that be? On a day like today (50 degrees and sunny) can you imagine not riding because of the wind?
(Note: I do have my limits for things like temperatures and I suppose if the winds were above 40 MPH I would probably not ride. Just use your common sense and set your "personal limits" based on your bike limits and rider skill level).
Aircraft pilots often refer to the season change from fall to winter as the "bumpy flight time" because Mother Nature has to use lots of wind to "push summer way" (likewise during the spring to summer change). Whatever the reason... the reality is strong and gusty winds on the ground (for us bikers) as well as in the air during this time of year and we have to know how to ride with these winds.
For most motorcycles, gusty winds are just an annoyance requiring some mild adjustments while riding. On a chopper, a gusty wind will feel like someone is standing beside the bike and is taking their best foot and pressing hard (in a sideways) direction right on the forward control peg (left or right depending on the direction of the wind). I am not sure if this is due to flex in the long forks, the rake, or both but it can make for a strange feeling like the front tire is going to slip out from under you.
So, I have found the best technique for dealing with strong and gusty winds is to ride in the center section of my lane (if the pavement and traffic conditions allow it) and maintain a strong grip on the handlebars while being relaxed enough to adjust as needed during and after the gusts. Mazda is an automobile name that originated from Jujiro Matsuda’s company that was founded in 1920 in the historic City of Hiroshima in Japan. Road Safety Guides - Personal Safety On The Road
If you are concerned about your personal safety while out and about on the roads here is a comprehensive, no-nonsense guide from GEM Motoring Assist, the leading UK driver based road safety association.
Think ahead
- where possible travel by day on main, well used roads. Plan your route in advance and check that you have an up-to-date road map in the car so you won’t need to ask for directions
- if you have to travel after dark, tell someone your destination, your route and what time you expect to arrive. If your plans change, let them know
- take your mobile phone - and make sure that the batteries are charged before you set off. Carry change in any case - your phone may be out of range at a crucial time
- ensure your car is serviced regularly. Check petrol, oil, coolant-level and tyres, especially before a long journey. Carry petrol in a safety-approved can
- join a national breakdown organization such as GEM Motoring Assist Breakdown Cover
While driving
- harassment or actual attacks are rare, but they do happen. Forethought can give you more confidence and minimise the risk
- keep the doors locked and the windows closed as much as possible, especially in built up areas and stop-go traffic or when travelling alone
- keep alert so you know where you are
- remember, tiredness kills. Take a break on long journeys

- if you park in a multi-storey car park choose a space close to the exit and ramp and away from pillars. Reverse into position to give you a quick get away. Park close to the attendant if there is one
- make sure you know exactly where you parked so you will not have difficulty finding your car
- if you are a woman by yourself, try not to advertise the fact. Put spare shoes, bags etc. into the boot before leaving the car
- consider what you would do if your bag was stolen - keep your keys, money and mobile phone separately
- ask a friend or colleague to walk you to your car if you feel unsafe about your surroundings
- when you return to your car, have your keys ready and check the back seat (use a torch at night) before you get in. Lock the doors and drive away without delay
Handling Dangerous Situations
- if you can see or become involved in an incident avoid getting involved in an argument with the other parties
- if you are confronted with ‘road rage’ do not get out of the car; keep your windows up and your car locked
- if your car starts to ‘play up’, stop in a busy, well-lit area, preferably near a phone box, if you don’t have a mobile phone. Get help immediately by calling your motoring organisation or garage. If you feel vulnerable and in need of special attention, inform the recovery helpline operator
- NEVER give lifts to strangers. If you see an accident or another driver in difficulty do not stop. Telephone the Police as soon as possible and report what you have seen
- if a car pulls up alongside or behind you and the occupants try to attract your attention it may be a genuine warning. However, keep your doors locked and drive to a busy place such as a service area or garage forecourt before stopping. Even then keep your doors locked until you are confident there is no danger
- if someone in a car is deliberately trying to intimidate you, or if you think a car is following you, keep driving until you reach a busy, public place, such as a Police, Fire or Ambulance station, pub or garage forecourt
- if a car travels alongside you at the same speed, slow down and allow them to pass. If the driver persists, drive to a busy, public place and use a public or mobile phone to call the Police
- if a car pulls in front of you and forces you to stop, leave the engine running. If the driver, or passenger then gets out and approaches you, turn on your hazard lights, reverse as far as you can and sound your horn continuously, no matter what time it is
- if the occupant of a car beside you at traffic lights or a junction tries to attract your attention simply ignore them. Don’t make eye contact.

Road Safety Guides - What To Do If You Break Down
If your vehicle breaks down, think about safety, first: Here’s a straightforward safety guide from GEM Motoring Assist, the leading UK driver based road safety association.
Consider your own safety
- get your vehicle off the road if possible
- ensure your passengers are safe and that animals are kept under control.
Warn other road users
- warn other traffic by using your hazard warning lights if your vehicle is causing an obstruction
- put a warning triangle on the road at least 45 metres (147 feet) behind your broken down vehicle on the same side of the road, or use other permitted warning devices if you have them. Always take great care when placing them, but never use them on motorways as this may put you in danger from oncoming traffic
- keep your sidelights on if it is dark or visibility is poor
- do not stand (or let anybody else stand) between your vehicle and oncoming traffic
- at night or in poor visibility do not stand where you will prevent other road users seeing your lights
- wear a reflective/fluorescent jacket or tabard.
Calling for help
- do not use mobile phones if there is a danger from petrol spillage or fumes
- contact the emergency services by dialing 999 or 112 (new international emergency code), or if you are a member call GEM Motoring Assist Breakdown Cover or other breakdown organisation
- give clear instructions of your general location: road number, direction of travel and specific local landmarks will aid your rescue
- also tell them your vehicle type and colour, registration number and how many persons are in the vehicle
- an indication of the cause of the breakdown will also help
- when help arrives, ask for proof of identity.
On Motorways – safety first
Leave the motorway at the nearest exit or pull into a service area. When this is not possible:
- use your indicators or hazard warning lights and pull on to the hard shoulder. Stop as far to the left as possible, with your wheels turned to the left
- try to stop near an emergency telephone (every mile on the hard shoulder) with the front passenger door as close to the phone as possible
- you must leave the vehicle by the left-hand passenger doors
- wear a reflective/fluorescent jacket or tabard
- do not cross the carriageway to reach a closer phone it is safer to wait on the verge. (Remember, 10% of motorway accidents are collisions with vehicles parked on the hard shoulder.)
- do not leave the keys in the car. If possible, lock all the doors except the front passenger door, which you should leave fully open so you can get back in quickly if needs be
- keep passengers away from the carriageway and children under control. Make sure children are safe – do not leave them in the car by themselves
- if you are an elderly or disabled person, or have small children with you, you may decide it is more sensible to stay in the vehicle. If so, park it as close to the verge as possible
- you must leave animals in the vehicle, with windows only far enough down to let in air. Only let them out of the vehicle in an emergency, but keep them under proper control on the verge
- do not attempt even simple repairs and do not leave the car bonnet open.
On Motorways – getting help
- walk to the nearest emergency telephone, following the arrows on the marker posts every 100 metres at the back of the hard shoulder. Calls are free and connect directly to the Police - they will know where you are. Stand behind the phone and watch out for passing traffic, or anyone approaching you
- give full details, also inform them if you feel vulnerable. Tell them the number of your breakdown organisation, your car registration and the number shown on the nearest marker post
- return and wait near your vehicle, preferably behind the barrier on the motorway embankment
- when help arrives, ask for ID and check that the breakdown person knows your name
- NEVER get into a car with a stranger or try to hitch a lift
- if someone offers help, stay inside your car with the doors locked (keep windows partially open) and ask them to phone your breakdown organisation for you
- if a car stops while you are waiting for help and you feel uneasy, stay in the passenger seat of your car and lock the door. Phone the Police and give them the car’s registration number
- when rejoining the motorway, always increase speed on the hard shoulder and watch for a safe gap in the traffic.

Always take great care when placing them, but never use them on motorways as this may put you in danger from oncoming traffic
- keep your sidelights on if it is dark or visibility is poor
- do not stand (or let anybody else stand) between your vehicle and oncoming traffic
- at night or in poor visibility do not stand where you will prevent other road users seeing your lights

Calling for help
- do not use mobile phones if there is a danger from petrol spillage or fumes
- contact the emergency services by dialing 999 or 112 (new international emergency code), or if you are a member call GEM Motoring Assist Breakdown Cover or other breakdown organisation
- give clear instructions of your general location: road number, direction of travel and specific local landmarks will aid your rescue
- also tell them your vehicle type and colour, registration number and how many persons are in the vehicle
- an indication of the cause of the breakdown will also help
- when help arrives, ask for proof of identity.
On Motorways – safety first
Leave the motorway at the nearest exit or pull into a service area. When this is not possible:
- use your indicators or hazard warning lights and pull on to the hard shoulder. Stop as far to the left as possible, with your wheels turned to the left
- try to stop near an emergency telephone (every mile on the hard shoulder) with the front passenger door as close to the phone as possible
- you must leave the vehicle by the left-hand passenger doors
- wear a reflective/fluorescent jacket or tabard
- do not cross the carriageway to reach a closer phone it is safer to wait on the verge. (Remember, 10% of motorway accidents are collisions with vehicles parked on the hard shoulder.)
- do not leave the keys in the car. If possible, lock all the doors except the front passenger door, which you should leave fully open so you can get back in quickly if needs be
- keep passengers away from the carriageway and children under control. Make sure children are safe – do not leave them in the car by themselves
- if you are an elderly or disabled person, or have small children with you, you may decide it is more sensible to stay in the vehicle. If so, park it as close to the verge as possible
- you must leave animals in the vehicle, with windows only far enough down to let in air. Only let them out of the vehicle in an emergency, but keep them under proper control on the verge
- do not attempt even simple repairs and do not leave the car bonnet open.
On Motorways – getting help
- walk to the nearest emergency telephone, following the arrows on the marker posts every 100 metres at the back of the hard shoulder. Calls are free and connect directly to the Police - they will know where you are. Stand behind the phone and watch out for passing traffic, or anyone approaching you
- give full details, also inform them if you feel vulnerable. Tell them the number of your breakdown organisation, your car registration and the number shown on the nearest marker post

Roush have developed this strictly llimited edition of the Ford GT to mark the end of production for the American supercar.
The vehicle was designed and is built at the Roush Technical Centre based in Brentwood, Essex.
The 600RE is based on a standard Ford GT, but features engine and styling modifications, these include:
* Upgraded supercharger pulley system * Unique vehicle numbering and identity plaques * Unique keyed light pack * Tubi exhaust system * Tinted windows * Transmission oil breather system * Colour coded hoses * Black powder coated wheels * (Optional) 4-point harness pack
Power and price figures have not yet been released, but the 600RE hints at a figure of 600bhp. Only 10 Roush 600RE's will be built, so you'd better get that order in quick!
In my eyes the Ford GT is the ultimate Ford and Roush have done the job of making what was already a pretty special car into something seriously unique not to mention fast!
Roush's attention to detail on all their cars is a real credit to the company and this particular model is no exception. Many after market car manufactures just fettle the engine to get it to produce lot's more horse power than the original but Roush take it much further than that, they always provide the complete package with modifications to pretty much every part in the drive train.
This version of the GT looks awesome with it's black paint and black wheels, making the car look rather stealthy that is until you open up the throttle!
It will be interesting to see the proper power and price figures when they are released, not sure I will be able to afford one but I can dream.
I think it's a shame Roush only plan to make 10 of these cars, they clearly want to keep it seriously exclusive but I think the demand for these cars is going to be huge just as it is for the standard Ford GT.

So, the Golden Rule applies somewhat to CB usage. You treat others on the airwaves as you would like to be treated.
Think before you speak. Wouldn’t everyone benefit from this advice? Seriously, truckers and trucking companies are not the only ones that use CB radios. Many people utilize the CB airwaves every day from police officers and peace keepers to the normal, average person. That means even children could be listening. So watch your words and avoid excessive or foul language. What you say is a reflection on not only you, but the trucking company you represent.
Don’t get taken for a ride. There are numerous people on the airwaves and some have a dozen sob stories to fit the conversation at hand. Others have a really “great deal” on some merchandise and would you be interested? Then there are those that want to meet you somewhere to “get to know you better.” Be careful of those situations, because more often than not, there is trouble. RV Insurance
Something you have to consider when buying an RV is the insurance cost, there are many factors which can influence this price. If you know what the insurers are looking for you may be able to get this price to a minimum.

Although it is already in production, this vehicle would start to be on sale come the first quarter of next year.
The Detroit Auto Show became the venue for Volvo Cars to show off the Volvo C30 which was introduced as a concept vehicle. However, the company already is producing this vehicle so much so that it would be available for sale at around the same time as the Volvo S80. Most likely, this vehicle would be competing with the Mini Cooper, the Scion xB, the Golf GTI, and the Audi A3. It roams around looking like a modern sport hatchback.
The safety features of the 2007 Volvo S80 is still like the typical ones that Volvo equips with vehicles. It is an elegant vehicle yet the company claims that it would not be elitist. Although this vehicle has already been in production since 1999, come 2007, the new version would come with minor upgrades like its new front fascia that appears to have more curves, a sleeker appearance, as well as a sportier aura.

This vehicle was primarily designed so as to attract and bring in the young and active people from urban areas. Safe Vehicles, Safer Passengers?
With all the upgrades to passenger vehicles in recent years you'd think the number of injury accidents would be on the decline. Most vehicle manufacturers have included both active and passive safety features to their cars in an effort to make them safer. For example, Nissan offers pipe-style steel side-door guard beams to absorb the impact of a side collision and Isuzu offers head-curtain side-impact air bags. Many vehicles also offer active safety features in an effort to help drivers prevent accidents such as antilock braking systems, automatic dimming rearview mirrors, and tire pressure monitoring systems. It is the combination of all of these active and passive safety features that make vehicles considerably safer for occupants than they've been in the past. But do they make us better drivers? According to a study completed by Purdue University, the answer is no.
Published in the Journal of Risk Uncertainty, the study suggests that drivers of "safe" vehicles (eg. – vehicles that are loaded with the best passive and active safety features) are just as likely to get into accidents and sustain injuries as drivers who were driving "less safe" cars. How can that be? It actually has nothing to do with the cars or the safety features – it has to do with the way we drive.
Researchers analyzed motor vehicle data from 1992 to 1997 in Washington State and found no marginal difference between the number of accidents or the level of injury to the drivers between the safer cars and those that weren't considered as safe. Why? Fred Mannering, Ph.D. and the study's author explains that people who know their car's safety features reduce their risk of both accident or injury at a given speed will drive faster to return to the original level of risk.
Sounds crazy? It's not. The psychological phenomenon is also referred to as "risk homeostasis." Psychologists analyzed a similar vehicle/road safety phenomenon in both Sweden and Iceland. When the Swedish changed to right hand traffic from left hand traffic in 1967, there was an immediate and significant reduction in the country's traffic injury rates and fatalities (studies have shown that right hand traffic is indeed safer than left hand traffic). However, within two years, the injury and fatality rates returned to their original levels. Why? The answer is in the perceived risk of the individual drivers. The change from left to right had an effect on how drivers drove. It increased their level of perceived risk and caused them to be more cautious while driving. The increased caution reduced the number of road crashes for almost two years. But people began to realize that the roads were less dangerous than they thought and because the risk of being injured in an accident had declined, they became less cautious in how they drove and the number of accidents began to climb back to the original number. When Iceland changed over to right hand traffic in 1968 it experienced a similar short term fluctuation in the rate of road crashes.
So what does this all mean? It means that despite the upgrades in safety equipment in today's cars and SUVs, it's important that we, as drivers, do not rely on the safety systems of our vehicles (and those driven by other drivers) to keep us safe. First and foremost, the decisions made by the driver (to speed, to run a red light, to cut in and out of traffic lanes) impact whether or not he/she will be involved in an accident and every accident runs the risk of injury to the people involved.
